Tip #7: Be Sure to Take a TIMEOUT!

I'll admit, it seems that some of you young guys have a more hectic schedule than I did growing up. Playing sports, homework, projects, tests, quizzes, hanging with friends etc. demand quite a bit of your time. I'll be honest and say I always had the impression that the younger generation was lazy. I stand corrected (for some of you).

The point I want to make is that in the midst of all these activities, you have to take a mental, physical, and spiritual TIMEOUT! If you are constantly going and going without having any downtime, you're like a car that will eventually run out of gas. You're not the Energizer Bunny (do you know what that is? Google or Youtube it.) and you need a recharge daily.

Here are some ways to recharge:

  • set aside some quiet time (without any stimulating video games)

  • listen to some soft music (something mellow and calming-I know, sounds boring right? That's the point!)

  • take time to pray or meditate

  • read a mellow book

  • go for a simple walk in a park to clear your mind

  • disconnect from your electronic devices for a certain period of time daily

  • take a quick power nap when you can

Think of it this way; there are no sports teams that play an entire game without taking a timeout or a break. Why? Because the athletes would probably die if there were no periods of downtime. So be sure to take a TIMEOUT every day!
